| HandyVan Scheme A NHW member in Shoreham picked up a "flyer' from the Citizens Advice Bureau and contacted me because they believed that it was "too good to be true". I have done some investigation and found that the HandyVan scheme is indeed legitimate and the details below. HandyVan is a scheme from Help The Aged, which is dedicated to bringing safety and security to older people in their own homes. As a charity, we obviously rely on funding, and I am pleased to say that Legal and General have sponsored a van in Sussex. This scheme launched in October last year, and Legal and General have committed to three years full sponsorship. Our fitter, Nigel Compton, lives in Sussex, and is fully CRB checked, and trained by our Senior Fitters. Once appointments have been made, he will visit the clients and perform a security check, which will include the fitting of window locks, door locks, bolts, spy holes, door chains, smoke alarms, carbon monoxide detectors and many other security products if required. He can also supply and fit handrails and grab rails, and undertake minor DIY and repair jobs. The products that we use are of the highest quality. This service is free to residents living in the specified postcode areas who are over 60 years old, and have less then £20,000 in savings. To apply, you just need to contact us at the admin office on 01255 473999, where administrators will take your details. An acknowledgement letter is then sent out, which will be followed up with a telephone call to arrange a mutually convenient appointment. Nigel carries photographic identification, in Help The Aged uniform, and driving Help The Aged van. If you have any other questions, please do not hesitate to contact me on my direct dial, which is 01255 473999. Many thanks | Trading Standards During July, Trading Standards will be launching its first Buy With Confidence Approved Trader Directory. The publication will include details of over 250+ Approved Traders that have been approved by Trading Standards. The publication will be available as a download on the County Council website. Alternatively, if you would like copies to distribute within your area, please contact Paul Gradidge with the quantities you require, on 01243 753511. More details will be sent to you soon with the telephone number and email address to be quoted to members of the public who may request their free copy. Survey update There were a total of 305 responses to the survey, which is approximately 5% of our NHW membership. All but one member was satisfied with the newsletter as it stands. Not one person wants the burglary dwellings removed. This is an essential part of the newsletter and makes people aware of what is happening around them, although five people did say that having the burglaries on the newsletter did make them feel threatened they still want the crime sheets to remain. A number of questions were raised for me to take to Chief Inspector James Asser. Thank you to everyone who took part. New Schemes/Co-ordinators This newsletter has been sponsored by; |
